News: Rami Malek for Interview Magazine

07.16.2016

Malek, 35, has been acting professionally for over a decade. He established himself as an edgy character actor in acclaimed indies like Short Term 12 (2013) and Ain’t Them Bodies Saints (2013), and has worked with the heavy-hitting directors Paul Thomas Anderson (The Master, 2012) and Spike Lee (Oldboy, 2013; Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, 2015), but as he tells his friend and Mr. Robot superfan Robert Downey Jr., playing Alderson has opened up a whole new world of possibilities, including his first leading film role, in Sarah Adina Smith’s mystery Buster’s Mal Heart, which he recently completed filming. Downey Jr. caught up with Malek by phone in early June, a few weeks after he visited the Mr. Robot set in New York. [Source]

News: ‘Mr. Robot’ Hacks into Emmy Race

07.15.2016

“Mr. Robot” has infiltrated the 2016 Emmys race following a critically-acclaimed freshman season, scoring six nominations following two major wins at this year’s Golden Globes, which crowned the USA series Best Drama and also rewarded Christian Slater as Best Supporting Actor.

The Emmys recognized star Rami Malek in the competitive Lead Actor in a Drama field, with TV Academy members also nominating the show in the Outstanding Drama category against heavy-hitters including “Game of Thrones” and “Homeland.” This marks the first Outstanding Drama series nomination for both USA Network and Universal Cable Productions, and Malek’s first Emmy nomination.

“I couldn’t be more honored to receive this nomination. To be included among of list of actors whose work I’ve admired for years is truly humbling,” Malek said of his nomination. “I’m so grateful for the brilliant Sam Esmail who brought Elliot to life and has allowed me to play a role one could only dream of. Thank you to the cast, crew, USA Network and Universal Cable Productions. And, of course, to the Academy.” [Source]

Coverage: The Face of Hacktivism

07.06.2016

Unlike most Hollywood attempts, the computer hacking scenes in the USA Network techno-thriller “Mr. Robot” are both cinematic and realistic-looking. But they aren’t so easy to shoot.

On the show’s set in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, in early July, a scene’s makeshift Wi-Fi antenna kept falling over, the screen of a prop cellphone wouldn’t stay lit and, in one fraught moment, a new laptop slid out of its box and crashed to the floor.

“I hope you bought the warranty,” the show’s star, Rami Malek, clad in the signature black sweatshirt of his character, Elliot Alderson, told a producer.

Mr. Malek swore, exasperated. “I thought I was supposed to be good at this tech stuff!” [More at Source]
